COLORADO-City of Lafayette votes to pull full ordinance public notices out of newspapers.
The City of Lafayette voted in Question 2C on November 1, which allows limiting the publication of full ordinances in newspapers. The results are unofficial but so far the referendum passed with over 58% of voters, voting for Question 2C. Prior to this overwhelming support of responsible stewardship of tax dollars, all ordinances needed to be published in full, in the newspapers. As reported in the Daily Camera "Passage of 2C would allow the city to publish public notification of new ordinances or changes to ordinances by title only -- with a statement indicating where the full text can be obtained online or at City Hall -- rather than publishing the full language of notices in a local newspaper."
The text of the Question 2C: "Shall Chapter VII, Section 7.4 of the Charter be amended to allow publication of ordinances by title, with a statement that the full text of ordinances shall be available for public inspection in the City Clerk's office and in posting locations established by City Council?
Why is this small town's public referendum important?
Because in most instances these issues are decided by politicians who, while claiming to be speaking for their constituents, are actually cowering in the face of oppostion from the news organizations whose endorsements they covet. So much taxpayer money has been wasted by requirements which subsidize local newspapers by requiring publishing of legal notices in print.
